The Galerie Hotel Leipziger Hof is delighted to warmly invite you to the exhibition “Maidenhood” by artist Victoria Chown.
The artist Victoria Chown was born in Lewisham (Great Britain) and grew up in Yorkshire alongside her two sisters and her cat, Pluto. She has been passionate about art since her childhood.
During her school and college years, she took art classes, but subsequently decided to initially dedicate herself to studying German and Ancient Greek Philology at the University of Cambridge.
After graduating, she returned to her passion for art and is currently studying to become a secondary school teacher for Art and English at the University of Leipzig. Since 2025, she has also been working part-time here at the Galerie Hotel Leipziger Hof.
Following her participation in a group exhibition at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park during her school years, as well as an exhibition at the University of Leipzig in the Geschwister-Scholl-Building, this exhibition marks her very first solo exhibition.
Her works include watercolour illustrations, self-portraits in graphite pencil, and self-portraits in ballpoint pen, exploring themes of sisterhood, friendship, nature, storytelling, and fantasy.
The exhibition brings together various series of works that engage with womanhood, identity, and societal expectations in different ways. Ranging from colourful, playful illustrations about women, nature, and friendship to more realistic, contemplative portraits, the pieces explore themes such as beauty, self-perception, diversity, and the role of women in society.
The contrast between these distinct visual styles particularly invites visitors to question their own ideas of what is perceived as serious, valuable, or “professional” art.
